Summary of Chapter 405 “Hunter x Hunter”

The chapter began with a scene of a man smiling while playing cards, repeatedly saying, “One more, one more.” Two elderly spectators were discussing the nature of the game, with the woman noting that poker usually uses one deck.

The man replied that it was a version of “QX”, a form of poker played with multiple decks. The game, called “503”, allowed players to add cards until they formed identical sets.

Winning meant that the bet would be multiplied by the number of successful “one more” draws, but exiting the game was impossible. This high-stakes option has seen many players fail, earning it the nickname “Go to Heaven”.

The player is revealed to be Hisoka, enjoying the game amidst the tensions of the Succession War. The scene cut to Hisoka’s inner monologue as he walked through the casino, expressing his disinterest in recent major events such as the extermination of the Chimera Ants and the manifestation of group powers through the Nen Beasts.

Hisoka admitted that he found these incidents unimpressive, stating that he only felt excitement in one-on-one life-or-death duels with other people.

Hisoka reassured himself that he was okay with being alone and didn’t mind the occasional fun. The scene then cut to a figure resembling Hisoka hiding nearby. This impostor expressed surprise at not meeting the real Hisoka at the VIP casino and wondered if he was a decoy.

Flashbacks between Chrollo and Bonolenov revealed that they were setting up a trap. Chrollo assigned Bolenov to stay in places frequented by the mafia, expecting that one of them would eventually invite him to a luxurious suite. Chrollo explained that allowing Hisoka to move freely within the mafia’s territory poses a threat to their reputation and balance.

The Mafia, unable to recruit figures like Hisoka, viewed the Phantom Troupe as a wild card. This led to the decision that if the mafia thought Hisoka was isolated elsewhere, the troupe would be able to search for him unhindered while maintaining appearances.

The scene returned to the present, where the fake Hisoka suggested that the real Hisoka had probably gained access to the upper level by the prince’s invitation.

Bonolenov, now disguised as an owl, using his transformation ability “Metamorphosis”, noted that he could only maintain his form as long as he interacted with the target. His power had limitations, especially with Hisoka, as he could only observe and report.

A tense moment ensued when Lynch, a member of the mafia, was confronted by the impostor Hisoka. Although the fake maintained his composure, he realized that he had made a mistake in speaking out loud.

Lynch, using her ability to read a person’s true intentions, deduced that he was an impostor and a potential threat associated with either Hisoka or the Phantom Troupe. This led to orders to warn Hinry and to prioritize eliminating the fake.

Bolenov’s plan was to lure away the infusion specialist and transform again after deceiving him. He decided that even if the woman’s body was discovered, it would not directly involve Hisoka to avoid unnecessary escalation.

Bolenov thought about Chrollo’s desire to resolve the issue personally, hinting at the boss’s shock at the incidents with Shalnark and Kortopi. The cycle of strategic restraint continued as Chrollo sought an opportunity to deal with Hisoka himself.

The chapter cut to a television ad recalling the unsolved murder of Mr. Risenort, the president of the Mommy Foundation. He emphasized public opinion, the victim’s legacy and skepticism towards media narratives. The scene then cut to Nobunaga, Phinks and Van of the Cha-R family discussing the latest events.

Nobunaga expressed suspicions about the changing dynamics within the mafia families aboard the ship, noting that the new leadership had made it more difficult to predict actions.

Vahn explained that Morena, the new leader of the Hail-Li family, was a descendant of the royal family and had no right of succession. This status allowed her to command her mafia faction while remaining largely mysterious.

Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan speculated on Morena’s purpose, noting that while regular mafia groups maintained balance, Morena’s tactics were much more destructive.

Nobunaga theorized that her group’s actions were intended to destroy everyone on board, seeing the voyage as a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to accumulate power through Nen-fuelled sacrifices.

The narrative ended with Morena discussing her plans with her subordinates. She planned to use Prince Halkenburg’s upcoming funeral as a chance to strike by discovering Dogman, a Level 2 Enhancer capable of detecting Nen types within a five meter radius. Morena expressed confidence in their preparations and her willingness to take revenge on Cha-R’s family.

As the chapter ended, Phinks, Feitan and Nobunaga walked through the dark corridors, preparing for the challenges ahead. The final panel hinted at an upcoming showdown between Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe, setting the stage for fierce battles to come.
