South Nashville Open Streets drew hundreds of people to Antioch Pike

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Michelle Garramon walked a couple blocks down Antioch Pike. South Nashville’s Open Streets closed the road to cars so residents could spend the day outside.

“We’ve never had anything like this, at least not since I’ve lived here for the last six years,” Garramone said.

Through children learning to ride bikes, hoop classes, children’s stories and food trucks, she approached Mayor O’Connell to tell him how something simple made a difference in the Glencliff community.

“I wanted to talk to the mayor, I just wanted to say thank you because sometimes I wonder if this part of the city is being thought about because I see other parts of the city developing very quickly,” Garramone said.

Two months ago, she said the addition of crosswalks and speed bumps made her feel safer when moving around.

“It’s made the game more accessible because we love going to the high school and playing on a course that she loves,” Garramone said. “We love meeting our other dog friends there, and I used to have to drive to the high school, which was a short walk away, so now I feel like I can just walk.”

Antioch Pike was closed from noon to 5 p.m. from Wright Middle to Glencliff Elementary School.

This is the second Open streetsevent at Antioch Peak this year. Open Streets is brought to the community by Mayor Freddie O’Connell, NDOT and Amazon.

A trip to see some of our neighbors’ best Halloween decorations.

There are only a few days left until Halloween. Americans are expected to spend about $12 billion on candy, costumes and jewelry this year. Over the past few years, it seems like more and more people are going out of their way to decorate their homes. Forrest Sanders had the opportunity to visit several communities in the middle of the state to see some of these Halloween decorations.
