Get out the sunscreen. Melbourne Cup day on Tuesday will see an above-average temperature of 27 degrees and just a 5 per cent chance of rain.

The sunny forecast will be welcome news for Victorians looking to make the most of the holiday, whether it’s at the beach, a barbecue or the Birdcage.

The average November temperature in Melbourne is usually 22 degrees, but it peaks at 27 on Tuesday before rising to 33 on Wednesday.

“Tuesday is shaping up to be a warm, mostly sunny day,” the Bureau of Meteorology’s Belinda House said. “Easy weather to be outdoors and have fun.”

Fog will be possible in nearby hills early Tuesday morning, with winds increasing northwest to northeast at 15 to 20 km/h late in the afternoon.

“But on Wednesday, be aware that temperatures are rising. It will be a little windy from the north and there is a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms,” House said.

The UV index will be very high at 9 in the coming days as Melbourne enters sunscreen season, which will last until March or April.

“We’re at a time of year that no matter the temperature, keep in mind that if you’re outside for an extended period of time, you’re going to need sunscreen,” House said.
