Teams love Oregon And Miami have been at the helm of their conferences for quite some time now and should be rewarded for their 9-0 start and a top-five ranking on Tuesday. Although the teams love Ohio State Georgia, Texas, Tennessee and Penn State were among the strongest teams in college football through 10 weeks, but suffered losses on each of their schedules.

Indiana And BYU were two of the most surprising teams in college football this season, adding a fun and new look to the 12-team squad this season. In past years stockings and the Cougars may not be in the CFP berth conversation despite their 9-0 and 8-0 starts, respectively. How many teams are there in the 2024 CFP?

This year’s College Football Playoff will feature 12 teams for the first time in the college football era: five automatic qualifiers and seven teams overall.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

It’s been well documented by now that the College Football Playoff will look different this year. In addition to the expanded number of teams from four to 12, there will also be first-round byes, automatic bids and home games.

Each of the five highest-ranked conference champions, meaning the Power Four champions and one Group of Five champion, will receive an automatic bid. After that, the top five conference champions, the top four, will receive 1-4 seeds and a first-round bye. The Group of Five champion will be seeded No. 12 if it does not finish among the top 12 teams in the final CFP poll.

Then seven teams will make up the rest of the field, starting with No. 5 and ending, presumably, with Team No. 11. Players ranked 5–12 will play first-round games at either the home of a higher-ranked team or another location of their choice.

No. 5 will accept No. 12; No. 6 will accept No. 11; No. 7 will accept No. 10; and No. 8 will host No. 9. The winners of the first-round games will then advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face the top four seeds.

Notable: Once the final bracket is announced, there will be no “realignment” to ensure the highest ranked team faces the remaining lowest ranked team. This means number 1 will play the winner of the game number 8/9; Number 2 will play number 7/10; Number 3 will play number 6/11, and number 4 will play number 5/12.

The CFP committee also will not take special measures to ensure that teams that meet in the regular season will not play in the postseason.

This year’s quarter-final games will be played in the Fiesta, Peach, Rose and Sugar Cups, with preferential cups awarded to the highest ranked teams. For example, No. 1 Oregon would likely favor the Rose Bowl, leaving the Sugar Bowl or Peach Bowl to No. 2 Georgia, and so on.

Semifinal games will be played in the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl, and the 2025 College Football Playoff game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
