The manufacturing sector has cut 78,000 jobs in the last three months.

The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released its data Friday. job vacancy report for October, in which the manufacturing sector lost 46,000 jobs last month, according to the agency’s preliminary analysis.

This followed a 6,000 job loss in September, also a preliminary figure, and a 26,000 job cut in August.

Manufacturing job losses in September included 44,000 job cuts in the transportation equipment industry due to a strike. This can be explained in part by the ongoing strike of approximately 33,000 members of the Boeing machinists union.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) began the strike on Sept. 13 and has previously rejected Boeing’s proposals for a new contract amid the impasse, although late Thursday the company put forward a new proposal to the union that is pending.

Boeing strike It has also spread through the aerospace giant’s supply chain, causing some of its suppliers, such as Spirit Aero, to temporarily lay off workers while workforce disruptions impact operations.

Small strike of 5,000 IAM drivers at aviation and aerospace industry Contractor Textron also lowered its manufacturing employment numbers. The Textron strike began on September 23 and ended on October 21, meaning it also had an impact on employment figures in the manufacturing sector.

The manufacturing sector has struggled with job creation over the past year, shrinking by 85,000 jobs, or 0.7%, over the past six months and by 50,000 jobs, or 0.4%, over the past 12 months.

The sector’s best month for job creation over the past 12 months was a gain of 25,000 jobs in November 2023, followed by a gain of 12,000 jobs the following month in December.

In 2024, the last monthly job gain in the manufacturing sector occurred in July, when it grew by 6,000 jobs. The biggest monthly gain this year came in April, when 7,000 jobs were added.

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) has called on the next administration and Congress to restore tax breaks for manufacturers. capital investments in expanding or upgrading facilities and equipment, and in relaxing regulations that could be costly to implement.

The Non-Aligned Movement also called on lawmakers to provide certainty to the industry, preventing the “tax armageddon” next year that is expected to occur when a series of provisions in the 2017 tax law, known as Tax Cuts and Jobs Act they expire.

“Frankly, there’s a lot of talk on both sides right now about the possibility of raising taxes on manufacturers and taxes on businesses,” NAM CEO Jay Timmons told FOX Business this summer. “This won’t help us. You know, this won’t help us grow. This will not help our economy grow. And it certainly won’t help our leadership.”
