A man has been arrested for leaving the gun at the ready that fatally shot a 7-year-old girl, police say.

A Philadelphia man who police say left behind a gun that… 7-year-old girl grabbed and fatally shot by chance on Sunday in Juniata Park on Monday he was charged with manslaughter and related offenses.

Alan Nguyen, 24, was arrested Sunday night after the girl found a gun he had hidden in a dresser at the children’s home where he was staying as a guest and accidentally shot herself in the face Sunday afternoon, Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanor said. .

Police responded to a report of a shooting at a home in the 3800 block of I Street around 2:27 p.m. When officers arrived, they found the child with a gunshot wound to the face, police said. Vanora said she was shot in the right eye.

The girl, who police have not identified, was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and pronounced dead at 2:39 p.m., police said.

Investigators learned that Nguyen was a friend of the child’s family and lived in their home, Vanor said. He said Nguyen put his 9mm pistol in a dresser drawer, and the girl was later playing in that room when she found the gun and unintentionally shot herself.

Nguyen legally owned the gun, Vanor said.

Experts said unintentional shootings of children can be prevented if gun owners store their guns safely and securely in their homes. Studies have shown that children as young as two years old are strong enough to pull the trigger, and most of them know where their parents keep their guns.
