Firefighters from CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department along with animal control officers and veterinary experts rushed to the scene east of Lake Elsinore in the unincorporated area of ​​Warm Springs last Friday afternoon.

The 350-pound horse fell 15 feet into the darkness, but the true depth of the well was hidden beneath the murky water.

Firefighters were able to secure Butter in a safety harness while animal control officers calmed the shaking animal. By nightfall, Butter finally emerged from the well, and a collective sigh of relief washed through the exhausted rescue team.

“It was great to put all that training into practice in a real-world environment,” said Lt. Kyle Stevens, who took part in the rescue. “It was definitely a great team effort from everyone involved.”

Riverside County Animal Services Veterinarian Dr. Itzel Vizcarra rushed to examine Butter, and the news was better than anyone had dared to hope.

“We were all amazed that she came out without any serious injuries,” Vizcarra said. “It was a huge team effort from many rescuers, so it’s good to know that Butters will be OK.”

Vizcarra said she was concerned about the possibility of hypothermia. Colleagues dried Oil and wrapped her in a heavy blanket. She also treated the horse’s wounds and administered pain medication.

“She was shaking visibly while she was buckled in,” she said. “It’s amazing that she left the same day.”
