Crews rescued three people from sinking boat off Milford, with one in critical condition

MILFORD, CT (WFSB) – Units rescued three people, one in critical condition, from a sinking boat Monday afternoon.

At 12:24 p.m., the Milford Operations Center received a call reporting a sinking boat with three people in the water near Milford Harbor. Their exact location was initially unclear.

Milford Marine units responded in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound.

They were informed that an oyster ship had heard the May Day call on the radio and was heading to help.

Upon arrival, the oyster boat crew found the vessel nearly submerged and all three men were pulled from the cold water onto their boat. One of them was in critical condition.

Milford Marine One encountered the oyster ship as it returned to the harbor, allowing the critically injured patient to be successfully transferred to the fire boat.

The incident occurred approximately two miles from the coast.

Passersby initially provided medical assistance until firefighters arrived.

The seriously injured man was taken to Milford Hospital for treatment, while two others were also assessed at the hospital with the assistance of the Coast Guard.

The cause of the flooding is still under investigation.

Notably, this incident marks the second time this fall that an oyster boat has come to the aid of distressed boaters in the area.
