Captain Rohit Sharma took responsibility for India’s humiliating defeat to New Zealand, ending their dominance at home in Tests. The Black Caps beat India 3-0, becoming the first team to whitewash India in a Test series of at least three matches. The hosts struggled with the bat and Rohit and former captain Virat Kohli were far from their usual best.

Rohit’s recent form in Tests is alarming. The Indian captain scored just 133 runs in his last 10 innings at an average of 13.30. Now, as he prepares for a tough tour of Australia, he has a crucial role to play as India’s final World Test Championship (WTC) qualification is on the line. After losing the series against New Zealand, India need to beat Australia 4-0 to qualify themselves.

Talking about Rohit’s recent performance with the bat, former opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth opined that the Indian captain is getting old and if he fails to find his rhythm in Australia, he himself will announce his retirement from Test cricket.

“100 percent, you need to start thinking ahead (if India doesn’t do well in Australia). If Rohit Sharma doesn’t do well, I think he will retire from Test cricket himself, as far as you know. He will only play ODIs. He has already retired from T20I cricket. We have to keep in mind that he is also aging. He is not getting any younger,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube show.

The 1983 World Cup winner praised Rohit for accepting his failure in the New Zealand Test. Srikkanth said Rohit’s confession itself is a sign that the latter is on the “road to recovery”.

“At least Rohit Sharma had courage. Hats off to Rohit Sharma for accepting the fact that he has played poorly throughout the series and has been a poor captain. This is cool. This is the player’s first step back into rhythm. It is very important to admit your guilt. This is a very important quality of a person. He accepted it openly, which means he is on the road to recovery, that’s my opinion,” he concluded.
