“POTUS,” an acronym for “President of the United States” often used by White House staff to refer to their boss, will remain the same regardless of gender.

Instead of the First Lady, the President’s husband will use the title “First Gentleman”.

The First Lady’s abbreviation “FLOTUS” will change to “FGOTUS”, which stands for “First Gentleman of the United States”. The position of First Lady will also be renamed to the position of First Gentleman.

“The First Gentleman will inherit a well-established office that has grown over time and is fully integrated into the operations of the White House,” Anita McBride, who served as First Lady. Laura Bush’s Chief of Staff from 2005 to 2009, told Business Insider via email. “We have Rosalynn Carter to thank for creating the First Lady’s modern office on a budget in 1978, and for moving her private office to the East Wing to become part of her staff. First ladies have benefited from this structure ever since. “

If Harris wins the election, her husband, Doug Emhoff will be not only the first first gentleman, but also the first Jewish presidential wife in US history.

A new first gentleman could take on the role of host traditionally held by first ladies, or redefine that role entirely.

Although there is no official job description for First Ladies, traditionally they have drawn up White House Christmas decorationsplanned state dinnersand acted as hostess of the White House.

“We understand what the job of a president is, and that there are certain elements to that job,” Lisa Kathleen Graddy, curator of political history at the National Museum of American History, told Business Insider. “The job of a first lady is much more ad hoc. It is created anew by each occupant of this position. It will be interesting to see if there are things that a man in this position chooses to do.”

Graddy said the first gentleman could continue to perform traditional White House tasks or change the role for future generations. It’s also possible that Harris will weigh in on some aspects of the job.

“I think in this family, the president would likely be more interested in menu choices,” she said. “She’s the chef in the family, isn’t she? So they can build as they please.”

Presidential fashion will include more opportunities for creativity.

Most men’s suit styles allow only a few customization options, such as lapel width or button thread color, Lauren Rothman, corporate and political fashion stylist, image expert and author “The Style Bible: What to Wear to Work” told Business Insider. Women’s suits allow for more creativity, which could change the face of presidential fashion.

“There are a lot of possibilities, whether it’s asymmetrical buttons, belts, waist details, stand collars, stand collars, pointed collars,” she said of women’s suits.

If Harris is elected, Rothman says she will likely continue to wear tailored suits and work with a team of stylists to further reinvent the presidential uniform.

“I think we have an opportunity to redefine what leadership looks like by having a woman president,” Rothman said. “I don’t necessarily see her going from where she was to something that feels like a first lady. I think if she becomes the next president, we’ll see something presidential, and I hope it’s unlike anything we’ve done before.” ever seen the first lady wear clothes.”

First Ladies“about various relatives of presidents who served as first ladies.

“In a sense, the essence of both exhibitions is: ‘What kind of work is this and how do you do it?’ said Graddy.

Graddy told Business Insider that the “First Ladies” exhibit would see its biggest changes if Harris is elected. It will likely be renamed First Ladies and Gentlemen, and Emhoff’s inaugural suit could be added to the collection inauguration dresses if he decides to donate it, it will be a striking transformation of an exhibition dating back to 1912.

“It would be really interesting to see two wall displays filled with dresses and a tuxedo in the center,” she said.
