Ron Perry Sr.’s Quiet Acts of Kindness for the Elderly

Ron Perry Sr.’s Quiet Acts of Kindness for the Elderly

Thanks to Dan Shaughnessy for his appreciation. “Perry Sr. was a Massachusetts sports legend.” (Sport, October 30). In addition to being a sports legend, Ron Perry Sr. was an extremely caring man who cared for those in need of help in his community. I was fortunate enough to meet him two years ago when my mother moved into Springhouse Senior Living in Boston.

Ron lived independently in Springhouse. My mother, who has significant memory loss, needed extra help and moved into a nursing home. She ended up having dinner at the same table as Ron and he graciously took her under his wing.

When my mother could no longer figure out how to refuse the menu or cut the meat, he took it upon himself to help her. Every evening he would gently suggest something he thought she would like, order it for her, and relieve her of the anxiety of having to perform a task she could no longer handle. He did it quietly and was businesslike in his generous acts of kindness.

I will always be inspired by and grateful for the example he set.
