Chiefs’ Andy Reid had great words about Patrick Mahomes’ ankle injury scare

Kansas City Chiefs star cornerback Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury on a touchdown pass to running back Samaj Perine during the fourth quarter of Monday’s 30-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

It would seem that everyone from Chiefs coach Andy Reid to Mahomes’ teammates to Chiefs fans held their breath as they saw the three-time Super Bowl MVP on the turf, in pain and in need of help from the coaching staff.

But Mahomes returned to the field and eventually helped lead the team. The Chiefs won in overtime. remain undefeated. After the game, Reed, when asked about the injury, told reporters he couldn’t believe the star QB was able to return so quickly, while adding a great line about Mahomes’ ankles.

“When they took him away, it wasn’t that easy… I wasn’t sure where exactly he would be with it.” Reid said. “He may have the weakest ankles in America. I mean, it’s funny how he can come back from stuff like that. And on top of that, he’s mentally strong.”

Reid went on to explain that he told Mahomes he was going to remove him from the game, but the Chiefs QB didn’t approve.

“He’s a competitor,” Reed said. “I told him I was going to beat him and he wanted to fight me. He’s a cool guy.”

Mahomes told reporters he thought Reid was joking when the coach approached him about pulling him off the tying play in the fourth quarter.

Reed declined to find any similarities between that ankle injury and the one Mahomes suffered in a 2023 playoff game and told reporters he would update his QB’s status on Tuesday. Mahomes, for his part, told ESPN’s Lisa Salters that he will be ready for the team’s Week 10 game against the Denver Broncos.

Reed, Mahomes and the Chiefs, back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions, own the best record in the NFL at 8-0.
