Live updates on Election Day 2024: Trump and Harris polls remain tied as US goes to vote

Candidate who scored 270 electoral votes whoever wins the presidential election, and the fate of Harris and Trump will likely depend on the results in seven states on the battlefield: Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and North Carolina.

Here are some of the ways Harris could reach 270 that seem most plausible given past election results:

In 2020, Biden won six battleground states: Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. He received a total of 306 electoral votes. Heading into Election Day 2024, polls in these states are close.

If Harris wins Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the “blue wall” of Midwestern states that Mr. Biden carried in 2020, and gets 3 of Maine’s 4 electoral votes but loses Arizona, Nevada and Georgia, it won’t win Harris White House.

In this hypothetical situation, Trump would also retain all of the states he won in 2020 and four of Nebraska’s five electoral votes, just as he did four years ago.

Under this scenario, Harris would win 269 electoral votes, which would prevent Democrats from keeping the White House under control. To get to 270, Harris will have to win the Nebraska congressional district that includes Omaha. The state allocates a portion of its electoral votes to congressional districts, and victory Nebraska area in Omaha which Biden captured in 2020 and Trump held in 2016 will make Harris president.
