Andy Peakes: Tamworth boss says FA Cup tie with Burton will ‘capture the imagination’

“I hear a lot of Tamworth fans talking about the rivalry with Burton, so it will definitely capture the imagination of the locals.”

Peakes, however, is still riding high after his side’s surprise National League win over the Terriers in front of the BBC cameras.

“I like the FA Cup because there will be a shock somewhere,” he added.

“We had to work hard to make it happen at The Lamb, it did and the atmosphere from the moment I got there was great with the TV crews and people coming in and it ended up being such a win on a fantastic night.”

Without a manager, Burton booked their place in the second round with a 1-0 win over Scarborough Athletic, but they sit bottom of League One, 17 places below Huddersfield, giving Tamworth reason to hope for another shock.

“We have some big league games before that, so I need to get back on my feet,” Peakes said.

“That’s our priority, but the FA Cup is never a distraction if you’re doing well in the league. The league games will take care of themselves and then we will be ready for Burton and will do our best to do it with a lot of supporters behind us.”

Peakes went with his son to watch Leeds United take on Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth the day after Tamworth’s win and would like to return to Elland Road in the third round if the Lambs can reach that stage for the first time since 2012.

“We go to Leeds when we can, obviously it’s difficult because the equipment is often not the same as Tamworth, but when we walked in a few people shook my hand and congratulated me,” he added.

“They said, ‘We hope you come back here for the third round’, I said I’d love to come back, but obviously we have a game to play before that.”

The second round matches will take place from November 29 to December 2.
