Election Day 2024: How to Vote in Person in DC, Maryland and Virginia

Polls in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia are open on Election Day 2024. Here’s what you need to know to be able to vote in person at your polling place.

How to vote in person in Washington

IN Washington, DC voters can vote in real time by completing same-day registration or updating their information at their assigned polling place.

Same day registration:

If you are not registered, you can register at any polling center by providing acceptable proof of residence. Accepted forms include: Current identification issued by the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles. Bank statement or utility bill (dated no later than 90 days). A lease or government document showing your name and address.

Recent bank statement or utility bill (dated within 90 days)

Lease agreement or government document with your name and address

Voting process:

By providing proof of residence, you will complete the registration renewal form and receive a live ballot.

If proof of residence is not provided, you will vote by special ballot and must provide acceptable proof for the vote to be counted by 5:00 pm on the Thursday after Election Day.

How to vote in person in Maryland

Marylanders be able to vote in person either during early voting or on Election Day. For the 2024 Presidential General Election, early voting is from Thursday, October 24, 2024 through Thursday, October 31, 2024 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can vote early at any early voting center in your county.

Election Day:

Where: Your designated polling station.

Time: from 7:00 to 20:00.

Important information:

You may bring one or two children under 18 with you to vote as long as they do not interfere with the voting process.

Cell phones, pagers, cameras and computers are not allowed in early voting centers or polling places.

You may want to bring printed materials, including a marked sample ballot, to help you vote.

First-time voters may be asked to show identification. Accepted forms include: Valid photo identification (e.g., Maryland driver’s license, U.S. passport). A recent utility bill or bank statement showing your name and address (dated within 3 months).

You can wear clothing, buttons or stickers with political messages, but must leave the polling station immediately after voting.

Write-in voting is allowed in general elections, but not in primary elections. Instructions for writing in votes will be posted at polling places.

If your employer requires proof of voting, ask the election judge for a certificate of participation.

How to vote in person in Virginia

Virginia The law requires voters to show acceptable identification or sign an affidavit of identification at the polls.

Voting requirements:

Voters who do not have acceptable identification may sign an affidavit of identification or vote provisionally.

Provisional voters must provide identification or sign an affidavit of identification by noon on the Friday following the election for their votes to be counted.

Acceptable forms of identification:

Before heading to the polls, review the list of acceptable voter IDs.

Pre-voting process:

Voters without ID will receive written instructions on how to provide ID or sign an ID Verification Statement after the provisional ballot.

Identification cards or signed applications can be submitted by fax, email, in person or by mail, but must be received by the local elections office by noon on the Friday after the election.

Polls are open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia on Election Day, November 5th.
