38 years after the original, David Cronenberg’s body horror classic The Fly is getting a surprise sequel, and it’s not a remake.

New film based on David Cronenberg’s body horror “The Fly” is in development—and diehard fans of the 1986 film need not worry, as 20th Century Studios promises it’s not a remake.

Deadline confirmed the news on Monday, November 4, announcing that Nikyatu Jusu is set to write and direct a new film set “in the universe” of the original. The project will be produced by Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping of Chernin Entertainment.

Based on a 1957 short story by George Langelaan that was first adapted in 1958, The Fly, starring Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum, follows Seth Brundle, an eccentric scientist who gets more than he bargained for when he invents a teleportation machine and accidentally connects its DNA with the DNA of the blue bottle during a test run.

Seth’s grotesque transformation with its practical effects, led by artist Chris Walas, earned the film an Academy Award for Best Makeup in 1987. The film itself grossed $60 million worldwide.

It established Cronenberg – who by then had helmed films such as Shivers, Rapid, Videodrome and Scanners – as a genre legend before going on to direct The Sound of Death, Crash, Crime of the future” and “Shroud” this year.

Jusoo previously directed the psychological thriller The Nanny for Prime Video and is currently working on a sequel to Night of the Living Dead and a standalone project for Universal and Jordan Peele’s production company Monkeypaw.
