Panthers ripped off Cowboys in WR deal

Jerry Jones continued his statement that Dallas Cowboys wouldn’t stand still 2024 NFL trade deadline.

On Tuesday Cowboys agreed to acquire wide receiver Jonathan Mingo from Carolina Pantherssending a fourth-round draft pick to the deal and also receiving back a seventh-round pick, a person familiar with the terms of the deal told USA TODAY Sports’ Tyler Dragon. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet official.

The NFL Network was first to report move.

Mingo, 23, was a second-round pick in the 2023 draft. The 6-2, 220-pound target has struggled to live up to his draft stock, but he caught just 43 of his 85 targets last season and recorded just 12 receptions for 121 yards in nine games this year.

Here’s how each team fared well in the deal.

Despair is not a good option for Jones. While the Cowboys are right to want to fix an outdated offense that ranks 22nd in yards per game (5.2), it seems unlikely that a receiver who was essentially passed over by undrafted rookie free agent Jacob Coker will be able to significantly change the situation in the match. a 3-5 campaign, especially with Dak Prescott likely to miss at least the next four games with a hamstring injury. And returning a fourth-round draft pick is completely baffling, with little to suggest that such a high price was required. While Mingo may have some untapped potential to unlock in a new environment, Jones’ pre-trade explanation that the Cowboys brought in a receiver they liked during the draft process seems to suggest the team is doubling down on the miss when assessing. and a focus on pre-perception rather than professional performance.

Panthers: A

After Caroline puzzled many getting a modest pick trade for Diontae Johnsongeneral manager Dan Morgan somehow secured even better draft capital for the underperforming Mingo. The sophomore is essentially a non-factor on offense at this point, not scoring a single goal in his last three games. As for baiting the likely mistake of the previous regime, everything is fine here. The Adam Thielen deal is probably a non-starter at this point given the other moves, but Carolina could survive the rest of the season with the 34-year-old and Coker.
