A family of 3 attempted suicide due to debt

Nizamabad: Unable to bear the alleged harassment by moneylenders, a family of three attempted suicide at the Basar bridge over the Godavari river on Wednesday.

While the man’s body was recovered, the daughter disappeared. The fishermen saved the wife. They have been identified as Uppulinchi Venu, his wife Anuradha and daughter Purnima of Nyalkal Road in Nizamabad.

According to the police, Venu took a loan of Rs 3 lakh from Vikas and Roshan, Gunjay traders in Nizamabad, and repaid it with interest. Moneylenders forced Vienna to pay penalty interest for late payment. The moneylenders allegedly misbehaved with Anuradha and Purnima.

Depressed by the incident, the family members decided to commit suicide and reached Basar on Wednesday. From the side of Ghat 1 they jumped into the water.

Fishermen on the Godavari River noticed the incident and rescued Anuradha. Basar police reached the spot and fished out Venu’s body, but Purnima is still missing.
