Former President Donald Trump was chosen one for a second term on Wednesday, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris — and leaving many wondering whether the president-elect could run for a third term in 2028.

Although there are still two states left to name, Trump has 295 electoral votesand Harris has 226.

Inauguration planned on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the United States Capitol Building in Washington, DC.

When will Donald Trump’s second term end?

The next presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, 2028. The next president will be sworn in on Saturday, January 20, 2029.

What does the Constitution say about presidential term limits?

22nd Amendmentratified in February 1951establishes that the president can only hold office twice. Here’s part of it:

“No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President more than two years from the term for which any other person was elected President shall be elected President ” was repeatedly elected to the position of President.”

Has a sitting president ever been elected for more than two terms?

Yes. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president, was in office from 1933 to 1945. Roosevelt won. four terms and was longest sitting president in US history.
