HGTV’s Jasmine Roth shares news of premature baby after tumultuous labor

HGTV star Jasmine Roth is giving fans an update following the dramatic premature birth of her second child, Darla, who was born a month early and weighed 4lb 8oz.

Taking to her instagram over the past week, Help! I destroyed my home And Hidden Potential the star introduced her subscribers to baby Darla, who was born premature on September 7th. Roth previously told People giving birth was a “terrifying” experience as she and her husband Brett went out to dinner when she went into labor and then got stuck in traffic on the way to the hospital.

Now the family is home and returning to their business. In an Oct. 28 post, Roth shared a series of photos of the newborn alongside her other daughter, Hazel, and her husband.

“Maternity Leave: Part 1,” Roth wrote. “We brought Darla home from the hospital after 15 days. Hooray! Hazel stayed with her grandmother and uncle and visited us every day, but it was still very difficult for us to be away from home.”

“And when I say we went ‘home,’ we actually went to an Airbnb because our house in Utah wasn’t finished yet, and since Darla arrived a month early, we didn’t have a chance to move. I’m not complaining though! Home is where your people are,” she continued.

Roth went on to say that Hazel is “the best big sister” and that “Darla loves her attention.” She also provided a medical update, explaining why Darla had a feeding tube attached.

“If you are like me, this was new territory as I had never had a premature baby before. It’s basically a tube that goes through the nose to the stomach,” she shared. “The milk (see photo 13 for the source!) goes through the tube directly into her stomach. Because Darla was born so small, it took her a while to get strong enough to eat an entire meal.”

She continued: “The hospital staff have trained us and each feeding is about 45 minutes by the time she feeds from the bottle/nurses and then we feed her slowly through a tube. It’s a slow and laborious process… good thing she’s cute!”

Later on October 31, Roth shared a video of Darla having her feeding tube removed. In the caption, she wrote about her experience of premature birth.

“It may seem strange, but it took me several days in the hospital to even realize that I had a premature baby,” she said. “Obviously I knew Darla was born a month early and she was in a low-level NICU, but it actually took a while for that to sink in. It’s crazy, but as a mother you see perfection and don’t even notice the tubes, sensors and equipment. It just didn’t occur to me that she was “premie,” and when I realized it, I remember being overcome with a feeling of fear.”

She added: “The day she picked up the tube may not seem like a big deal, and I apologize for the crude video, but for the mum of a premature baby (a title I now wear with pride) that day was everything. Tears of joy, lots of smiles and gratitude to all the doctors and nurses who have taken such good care of our little girl up to this point. THANK YOU! Now Focus is growing and feeding her (without a tube) and we are so excited.”

In another post, Roth shared photos of the extended family visiting baby Darla, writing, “I don’t always post pictures of extended family, but these days are special and I want to remember them.”

She also shared footage from a family photo shoot in the forest. “Was it an ambitious task to take a three-week-old baby into the forest for photographs? I bet! But was it really nice to have an excuse to shower and put on “real” clothes? Yes and yes,” she joked in the caption.

Roth is a designer and builder who won the first season of HGTV. Rock block. She now hosts her own shows on HGTV. Hidden Potential And HELP! I destroyed my home.
