Colorado’s new hands-free law will be expanded in 2025

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Starting January 1, drivers will be prohibited from holding phones or otherwise using mobile devices while driving.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said that while drivers cannot use or hold their mobile devices, hands-free accessories will still be allowed. These accessories include CarPlay, Android Auto, car speakers, dashboard mounts and Bluetooth headsets.

“The new law expands the ban on cell phone use beyond just texting,” CDOT said. This now includes holding or manually using a phone or other mobile device for voice calls or for any other reason, requiring all drivers to use a hands-free device.”

CDOT said the law still applies to people sitting at traffic lights or in traffic.

Penalties for violating the law will start with a $75 fine and two license suspension points for a first offense, and repeat offenders could face more points and higher fines, according to CDOT.

CDOT said a first-time violator can have the charges dismissed if they provide proof of purchasing the hands-free accessory.

This law does not apply to emergency reporters, utility workers, law enforcement officers, animal welfare officers, persons with a commercial driver’s license operating a commercial vehicle, first responders, and occupants of parked vehicles. . CDOT said the reason for these exceptions was so that emergency personnel could obtain important information.
