1. Use natural language

ChatGPT Search is still part of ChatGPT, and while its conversational skills in search mode are a bit clunky, it is still built on top of the larger GPT-4o language model. You can ask questions in natural language or even send a message as if you were asking a friend for help.

The more details you provide in your question or request, the better ChatGPT’s response will be. For example, if you want to know the 10 tallest buildings in Europe, be sure to include the “Europe” part. You can even specify how the information should be displayed. For example: “Show me the ten tallest buildings in Europe in a table, from smallest to largest.”

Or, as shown in the example above, you can ask it to show you the moons of the solar system, ordered by average radius.

2. Talk

One of my favorite aspects of AI chat platforms is the chat. The ability to carry on a conversation and know that he can pick up on even the smallest hints is incredibly powerful.

This also applies to search in ChatGPT. You can ask your initial query about the tallest buildings in Europe and then add something like “what about North America” and it will understand that you are talking about the tallest buildings. You can even say “what about the wonders of nature?” and he will understand that you mean Europe.

This can also be useful if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for with your initial query. You can start with something fairly vague and refine it with subsequent messages, even asking ChatGPT to help you understand what you want the answer to be.

3. Use quotes

For each item in the response to your query, ChatGPT will provide a quote in the form of a small text bubble. This link takes you to the website from which the information was obtained, such as Tom’s Guide or Wikipedia. By clicking on it, you can expand the piece of information.

I may be biased, but I think going to the source of a story rather than just using an AI snippet is a great way to learn more about a topic. Original articles often include additional information, context, and resources such as charts or tables. Especially if it’s an academic source.

4. Find links and engage in multimedia

In some ways, ChatGPT search is similar to Google, especially in the way it handles multimedia content. It can add images and video clips to the results to provide additional visual information.

You can specifically ask him to find images. For example, I asked him to show me a picture of the largest building in Europe and then show it next to the largest building in the world.

He was able to show me the Burj Khalifa in Dubai next to the Lakhta Center in Russia in images from the Internet, but he hallucinated by creating an illustration of the two objects together.

You can also use the full range of tools available in ChatGPT, including a variety of GPTs and DALL-E, an AI image generator, so if it hallucinates an image, simply type @DALL-E and ask it to create the image you were expecting.

5. Provide sources

Finally, ChatGPT Search is a search engine just like Google. In addition to displaying a descriptive text response to your query with embedded citation links, it also shows all the sources returned in response to the query in a new sidebar view. It looks like any Google result.

Since sources are still retrieved, you can also use ChatGPT to do “site-specific searches.” Just ask it to view only a specific website. There’s no need to specify site:tomsguide.com like you do with Google, just say “find stories about Apple Intelligence on tomsguide.com” or even just Tom’s Guide and the system will know what you mean.

In addition to specifying the source, you can also specify the time range. So, for example, you can ask it to find all the ChatGPT stories written by Ryan Morrison for Tom’s Guide in June 2024, and it will refine your search without having to change settings or use tools.
