Leopard caught in wild boar trap rescued after 10-hour operation in Odisha

A leopard caught in a trap set for wild boars in the Asanbakhali sanctuary of the Dhenkanal forest department was rescued after a 10-hour operation on Thursday.

According to sources, some local residents were the first to notice how the big cat fell into the trap. They immediately transmitted the information to the Mahabirod training ground. Soon, more than 100 forest department personnel from different forest areas of Dhenaknal forest division and three rescue teams from rescue centers of Bhubaneswar, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul and Kapilas reached the spot and began the operation.

The animal was saved only after the injection of a tranquilizer.

“The animal fell into a trap set for wild boars. He was rescued with minor injuries. This is a male leopard about five years old. His health is good. After treatment, he will be sent to Nandankanan for further observation. An investigation has been initiated,” said Sumit Kar, DFO, Dhenkanal.

In this regard, the Forest Department has launched an investigation.
