A Middleboro woman with a history of animal cruelty has been charged with neglecting 26 animals.

A Middleboro woman previously convicted of animal cruelty was charged again in the same case after authorities said they found more than two dozen horses, dogs, cats and guinea pigs on her property “left in deplorable conditions.” “

Kimberly Savino, 43, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Wareham District Court to 26 counts of cruelty to animals by a custodian as a subsequent offense. First Judge Edward H. Sharkanski allowed Savino to return home without bail, but prohibited her from having contact with animals.

The Plymouth District Attorney’s Office requested a $5,000 cash bail, arguing that Savino poses a threat because she was previously charged with similar crimes in Michigan in 2014 and ordered to pay a $40,000 fine. Savino is due back in court Dec. 10 for a preliminary hearing.

The case began when the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell conducted a “routine inspection” of Savino’s horses and found that they were “significantly underweight” and fed “very poor quality hay.” The MSPCA then involved the Middleboro Police Department in the case, according to the DA’s office.

Prosecutors allege that over the next several months, Savino did not follow MSPCA guidelines on how to properly care for horses and either canceled or rescheduled at least nine appointments to check on the animals.

Authorities then searched the home on Oct. 18 and found not only the horses being abused, but also 17 dogs, cats and a guinea pig inside the home, “left in deplorable conditions in the basement.” In addition, police found the remains of “several” dead dogs in both the freezer and in Savino’s garage. Authorities seized the live animals.
