Young pit bull killed in Cobb County, video may reveal culprits

A search is underway in Cobb County for several people involved in an aggravated animal cruelty case. Some were caught on camera trying to dispose of the dead dog’s body.

Surveillance video shows two men carrying a metal dog crate covered with a sheet and placing it in front of a dumpster at the Legacy at West Cobb Apartments on Favor Road. The video also shows a third man leaning a mattress against a box in an apparent attempt to hide it.

Cobb County Animal Services Director Steve Hammond says there is a dead dog inside that box.

The second video shows them returning the next day to pick up the dog.

“The offenders returned, removed the dog from the crate, placed it in a blue plastic bag and then left the scene with it,” Hammond said.

Hammond wants to find out who these people are, as well as the juvenile who investigators believe is responsible for the dog’s death.

“We learned that a dog drowned in the bathtub, we believe a juvenile was involved,” Hammond said.

Hammond believes it was a young brown and white pit bull. But he knows nothing more about the puppy because investigators were unable to find the animal’s body.

“We had quite a bit of resources to search the woods because at some point we were told that he was placed in the woods and in a creek that was there. Our search and rescue team from the police department came out and helped with the search. and we couldn’t find him,” Hammond said.

All this happened at the end of July. While they may never find the dog’s body, they are determined to find those responsible.

“We want to know who did this and try to find out why, and maybe that person needs help. We want to prevent this from happening in the future,” Hammond said.

It’s now a matter for Crime Stoppers. Since it was published earlier this week, several tips have come in, but Hammond says they need more. You can submit any information by calling 404-577-TIPS (8477) or online at StopCrimeAtl.org. You can remain anonymous.
