Chaos in J&K Assembly for third straight day amid row over contentious special status resolution

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed chaos for the third consecutive day on Friday (November 8) over a contentious resolution demanding restoration of J&K’s special status.

The assembly session was marked by loud arguments, fights and a BJP walkout after several party members entered the well of the house and were subsequently escorted out by marshals.

The uproar began on Wednesday after the Jammu and Kashmir (JK) National Conference introduced a new resolution calling for restoration of the special status of the region.

The BJP strongly opposed the resolution, calling it “illegal” and demanding its withdrawal. NDTV reported.

However, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected the BJP’s demand, saying the House itself, and not the Speaker, has the power to repeal any resolution passed.

During opposition leader Sunil Sharma’s speech, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leader Sheikh Khurshid entered the meeting with a banner demanding restoration of Article 370 and 35A.

BJP lawmakers quickly reacted by grabbing and tearing the banner, sparking a brief altercation in which People’s Conference MP Sajjad Lone sided with Khurshid.

This commotion led to a 15-minute break in the meeting.

When the session resumed, BJP members continued their protest, ignoring the Speaker’s calls for order.

“Don’t force me to take actions that I don’t want to take,” he warned as BJP members continued to chant slogans in honor of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
