“It’s a very complex movement that combines 1960s technology with very early horological technology from the late 19th century,” he said.

The movement was updated with an electric motor in 1959, but some parts of the watch date back to the 1800s.

The replacement parts must be specially manufactured by a watch repair company in Cumbria, the council said.

“We would like to have the watch launched as soon as possible, but it is in high demand and we are truly in the hands of specialists,” Mr Storey added.

The city said there is no confirmed date for the renovations.
