Barbara Kay: Harris doesn’t hate low-status men, she just doesn’t see them

10 days left and 25 million votes already castThe US election is too close to call. Gender, where the difference between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris supporters is almost 25 points, is leading factor in this dead end. Trump’s large male base is as strong as ever. The Democrats’ traditional male base isn’t that big. Harris still stitches up educated LGBT men. But something significant happened go to Trump among young black men.

Desperation to get them back leads to mistakes, not goals. IN abusive lecture, former President Barack Obama effectively accused black men of misogyny, suggesting that some “brothers” liked Trump’s ability to “degrade women.” Harris proposed the “Black Male Opportunity Program,” which offered $20,000 forgivable business loans to black small business owners; it was criticized as likely unconstitutional, and soon went back. And the patronizing style of the dating game announcement managed to offend both black men and stereotypical women: it was frankly said that a black man’s sex appeal depended on the support of Harris.

Women who lack financial or social support from male figures in their lives (disproportionately black women) form a strong Democratic constituency, 72-24 percent. Political scientist David Samuels calls them “State Brides (BOTS).” In contrast, married American women support Republicans by 50-45 percent. Samuels writes: “In other words, without the overwhelming support of Democrats from the BOTS, America would be a Republican country with a stable majority in which Trump would likely win a landslide election victory.”

So Harris could use some unconventional support from the straight, white, male, working-class voters Trump appeals to. But dating low-status men—black or white—is not her forte. Her gender comfort zone is an environment populated by highly educated progressive men, including her husband Doug Emhoff and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, who are happy to show exaggerated deference to Harris.

In Emhoff’s telling anecdote recalculated Kamala’s dissatisfaction after Biden’s abdication when she was unable to contact him (he was at a cycling class, phone in the car). After learning of her disappointment, he laughingly told the podcast host: “I just ran into the car and there was my phone, literally – you could feel the steam…” “I call Kamala… and it was a one… minute or less conversation that started with words: “Where the hell have you been?”… And, in essence, “Get to work.” And I did it.

When published on X, Emhoff’s revelation prompted a scornful reaction (which perfectly captured my own astonishment): “If I were a man, you couldn’t get this story out of me.” A dissenter wrote: “If she were a man you would love this story. Your misogyny is showing.” She’s wrong. The same words spoken by a male presidential candidate to his wife, if made public, would cause him to be branded a toxic Neanderthal. But then no savvy political wife would think to share them, especially if the husband had a known history of anger issues in the workplace. albatross Harris can’t be swayed, but he never has to defend himself.

Harris’s illustration of appalling ignorance of ordinary men came from “real men.” announcement Harris approved that it was intended to attract undecided male voters. There were six actors in it, because no real man would ever say that parody nonsense out loud, like, “I’m a man. I’m a man. I am a man, a man…”; “I’m man enough to lift 500 pounds and braid the hell out of my daughter’s hair”; “Do you think I’m afraid to repair the carburetor? I eat carburetors for breakfast”; and, of course, “Does a woman want to be president? Well, I hope she has the courage to look me straight in the eye and accept my full support.”

This “the most disgusting thing in the worldThe impressively unconvincing ad competes with the cheerfully off-brand 2023 Bud Lite. transcentric advertising for betraying the market. As Nellie Bowles of The Free Press marked about the first: “This is not an advertisement for anyone who has ever met, let alone interacted with, a heterosexual man.”

For those who took early notice of her as a future national leader, Harris’s disregard for the rights and concerns of ordinary men was on full display during Judge Kavanaugh’s 2018 confirmation hearings. I remember one turning point in her interrogation in particular. Mindful of women’s unfettered abortion rights (when do they not?) and signaling a preemptive triumph on an issue she believed was uncontested, Harris asked Kavanaugh, “Can you think of any laws that give government has the right to make decisions? decisions about the male body?

Harris was lucky. Kavanaugh was flustered and missed his answer. If he were in his right mind, Kavanaugh’s response might have been: “Yes, Senator Harris, I can. Every 18-year-old male U.S. citizen is required to register for the draft, regardless of whether he has ever considered military service or whether he is subject to conscription in the event of an emergency. No American woman has such an obligation. Indeed, forced military service for men, with all the attendant risks to life and health, has been the norm throughout human history.”

Unfortunately, the beleaguered judge missed his golden opportunity to push back against Harris and paint her as what I call an “accidental misandrist.” Harris doesn’t hate low-status men. As her stupid ads and Kavanaugh’s question demonstrate, she just doesn’t “see” them. And they know it.
