Holden Trent, Philadelphia Union backup goalkeeper, dies at 25

Holden Trent, a backup goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, died Saturday, Oct. 26, at Major League Soccer. the statement says. He was 25.

The team did not release a cause of death, but his family posted on his Instagram account this week that he was in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent,” the club said in a statement. “While he was a great player and a fierce competitor, more importantly, he was a devoted son, brother, groom and teammate who made those around him better.”

On Trent’s Instagram, his family said in a statement that he died “surrounded by his family and friends.”

“Our family is deeply touched by the love you all have for Holden,” the family said.

Trent, from Greensboro, North Carolina, was selected 28th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft by High Point University. Although he has not yet played for the first team, he has made several appearances for Union II this season.

“Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic passing of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent,” MLS wrote on X.
