Jury selection continues for woman accused of dismembering her mother

LANDOVER, MD. – The second day of jury selection began Wednesday in the trial of a Maryland woman accused of dismembering and burning her mother.

FOX 5 was there during the election process, which was open to the public and media. There are 150 jurors who could potentially serve in this trial.

If elected, they will be named in the lawsuit against 46-year-old Candace Craig.

Authorities believe Craig killed his mother, 71-year-old Margaret Craig, on May 23 at their home in the 200 block of Hill Road in Landover. After the incident, his 19-year-old daughter Salia Hardy was accused of complicity.

Investigators said the next day, Hardy helped his mother dispose of the remains by dismembering her body and burning it on a barbecue.

Officers were called to the home on the afternoon of June 2 to check on the grandmother’s well-being and were allowed to search the interior. The Homicide and Evidence Units were notified and an investigation was initiated.

Prince George’s County police said in a statement that when they entered the house to investigate, they immediately smelled decomposition.

State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said the attack followed what was believed to be “an argument over fraudulent credit card charges.”

“This case involves domestic violence, and that’s something we don’t necessarily talk about when we look at domestic violence,” Braveboy said. “Next week on Tuesday, October 29, we will host our 7th Annual Meeting. #NotOne town hall “It’s where we highlight our victims and survivors of domestic violence and ensure their voices are heard.”

From here, a jury of 12 to 15 people will be selected, with a maximum of three alternates. After the jury is selected, opening statements will be made.

The trial is expected to last at least two weeks.
