Perth and Kinross school strikes enter second week

BBC Scotland News also spoke to some council leaders who said the proposal could not be renewed unless the Government helped.

The strike has created practical problems for some parents in Perth and Kinross, who have had to arrange childcare or take time off from work.

Many of the closed schools are providing distance learning so children can get some work done at home.

The council also said payments would be made to families who missed out on free school meals due to the strike.

Unison plans to hold a national vote among council staff to see whether they will go on strike, but has not yet confirmed details.

Any vote would likely take several weeks. If the union receives a mandate to act in more municipal areas, it will have to give two weeks’ notice of a strike.

In the coming weeks, councils should find out how much money the Scottish Government plans to give them for next year and how much they can increase council tax.

Unison insists it still wants to see pay rises this financial year.

But it is possible that the focus could shift to securing a larger “recovery” pay rise from next April.
