21-year-old to be sentenced for murder of Cleveland mother

CLEVELAND, Ohio (VOYO) – A 21-year-old man is scheduled to be sentenced in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Monday morning.

In September, a jury found Dennis Coates guilty of fatally shooting a young mother while she was holding her baby.

Dennis Coates’ trial began Sept. 16 before Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Maureen Clancy, and the jury returned a verdict Sept. 25.

Coates was found guilty of murder, assault and attempted murder.

Cleveland police said Coates killed 23-year-old Dimesha Wright around 3:30 a.m. Dec. 14, 2023, in the area of ​​East 185th Street and Harland Avenue.

Coates fired an AR rifle through the front door of the home.

Wright was holding her 7-month-old baby when she was shot. The child was not injured.

Coates will be sentenced at a later date.
