‘Hungry and dehydrated’ gray seal pup rescued

An “emaciated, hungry and dehydrated” gray seal pup was rescued from a Jersey beach.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue Channel Islands (BDMLR CI) said on Facebook that the puppy found in Bonn Nuit harbor weighed the same as a newborn, although it was three to four weeks old.

The team named the puppy Rocky and thought he had been washed away from his mother before he was weaned, leaving him without a vital supply of fat.

Rocky’s prospects were considered “grim” but he was taken to New Era Veterinary Hospital where he was given vital fluids and is now doing well.

BDMLR reported that a gray seal pup crawled onto the beach and fell asleep (BDMLR)

BDMLR said: “Grey seals do not seek human interaction, but this pup knew, despite the small crowd of people on the beach, that it needed to get out and rest.

“He dragged himself onto the beach while his searchers retreated, took control of the dogs and immediately called us. Then he fell into a deep sleep.”

There is no kennel on the island, and the Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals closed for renovationso the BDMLR team is trying to find him a new home.

“All offers of help and websites have been greatly appreciated. We did have a plan and through no fault of our own we are disappointed to report that it failed,” BDMLR said.

It added that Rocky was “doing great on the mackerel soup every day.”
