The prisoner’s cause of death is being investigated

Inmate’s cause of death under investigation State medical examiners and coroners are investigating the death of Robert Fisher at the Elmira Correctional Facility today. Fisher had just begun serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of raping and murdering 3-year-old Josefina Cunningham in July 2023.

Fisher had just begun serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of raping and murdering 3-year-old Josefina Cunningham in July 2023.

Fisher was pronounced dead around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Fisher was 34 years old.

The cause of death was not disclosed. This will be determined and published by the Chemung County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to DOCCS. State law leaves it up to medical examiners and medical examiners to decide whether results should be released and to whom.
