The young man with the knife who stood over his victim lying on the ground was jailed. Esmaeel Mohamed was in Wigan city center on July 18 this year and became increasingly distressed and restless.

This led to the 19-year-old stealing a large knife from a shop and running into the street. Despite bystanders trying to subdue him, he unpacked the knife before approaching his victim.

The courtroom was shown shocking images of Mohammed lying on the ground as he stood with a knife in his hand. The most serious injury sustained was a four-centimeter wound to the lower back. Initially walking away, Mohammed returned to attack his victim a second time. The police arrived at the scene and neutralized Muhammed with a stun gun.

Prosecutor Eleanor Gleeson told Bolton Crown Court: “The defendant came up behind the victim and said ‘give me your phone’ before the defendant stabbed him in the back with the knife.”

Mr Colin Buckle, mitigating for the defendant, said: “The effect of mitigation does not come easily when someone approaches someone in the street and stabs them. “There was no suggestion that he would do anything other than plead guilty.

“The defendant said that he had mental health problems and could not understand it. He said that he thought differently than other people. What is the explanation for a young person with no previous criminal record committing such a crime? When someone acts like this, there must be an underlying problem.”

Recorder Gavin McBride sentenced Mohamed to six years in prison, with a four-year extended sentence. Upon release, Mohamed will remain on license for another four years beyond the standard period.

Judge McBride said: “You run the risk of committing further offenses so I think an extension of sentence is appropriate.” Additionally, the court issued a restraining order against Mohamed, prohibiting any contact with the victim, encouraging others to make contact, or coming within 100 meters of the victim.
