Man accused of shooting FWPD officer pleads guilty to attempted murder

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WAYNE) — A man faces decades in prison after he shot and killed a Fort Wayne Police Department officer while facing burglary charges earlier this year.

Zar Ni Myint, 20, pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of attempted murder, robbery and possession of a machine gun. He faces a total of 30 years in prison.

June 13 FVPD investigated a burglary at a home in the 4700 block of Holton Avenue. According to Allen Superior Court documents, Myint broke into the home and was still there when police arrived. He was then accused of shooting an officer with an automatic pistol.

Although police returned fire and struck Myint, he ran away, according to court documents.

Some time later, someone driving in the area reported that Myint approached their car and said he had been shot by police.

That evening, someone else called police to report that a man, bleeding and without shoes or a shirt, asked them for a ride.

Officers eventually found Myint hiding in the 1300 block of Fairfax Avenue. He was treated at a hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and later taken to the Allen County Jail.

The officer who was shot was also in stable condition after being treated at a hospital.

As part of the plea agreement signed Friday, two charges will be dropped if the judge agrees to the deal at Myint’s sentencing: aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony, and resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony. .

Myint’s sentencing is scheduled for November 18.
