Over the years, EastEnders has become synonymous with the holiday season, especially this all-important Christmas episode. Nothing says Christmas like death, divorce, fighting and betrayal, right? While some people tune in once a year to watch the show’s latest season offerings, many dedicated viewers eagerly wait to see their favorite storylines from the past 12 months reach a dramatic climax.

The best example of this was last year’s Six storyline, where Christmas 2023 was announced ten months in advance. Viewers learned about this through flashforward in February that one of the Square’s men would die at the Queen Vic, and that Sharon, Denise, Linda, Suki, Stacey and Katie were involved.

Millions of people watched the big reveal over Christmas and, during the stunning episode, learned that Linda killed Keanu.

Christmas 2024 has a lot to live up to, and plans for this year are being kept under wraps in comparison. It’s unknown what the show’s big Christmas storyline will involve this year, but there are some clues that will keep fans guessing as December approaches. Here’s everything we know so far.

Current storylines

Cindy Beale, Junior, Eastenders

The most obvious example of a current storyline that could explode on Christmas Day includes Cindy Beal and Junior Knight. The couple began an affair earlier this year, despite Junior being the son of Cindy’s ex-wife, George. Although Cindy was drawn to the dangers of romance, it became clear that Junior had very real feelings for her.

Things came to a head earlier this month when Ian decided to propose to Cindy, unaware of her serious betrayal. But before the engagement, Cindy and Junior were caught kissing by her ex. David Weeks, who visited Walford briefly. In a frank conversation with David, Cindy admitted that it was George that she really loved and even thought about him while she was in bed with Junior.

Soon after, Cindy ended her affair with Junior for good. But at some point it turned out that Freddie’s birdwatching microphone recorded Cindy and David’s revealing discussion..

It seems inevitable that this damning footage will come to light at some point, and why not at Christmas? We may soon see a repeat of the infamous 2007 Christmas episode where Stacy and Max’s romance was revealed to the Brunnings and Slaters on the wedding DVD.

Of course, the iconic storyline involving the Six has yet to be fully resolved, almost a year after its impressive Christmas opening. It feels like half the Square knows by this point that Linda killed Keanu, but the women are still trying to keep the big secret under wraps. They could be in serious danger next week when Nish finds out the truthbut Christmas might be the perfect time to bring this epic story to a close.

Since TV series are filmed a couple of months in advance, EastEnders The cast recently filmed exciting Christmas episodes, and we realized that the festive period in Albert Square could become a must-see for fans.

Talking to Radio TimesShane Richie, who plays Alfie Moon, said he got a front row seat. dramatic events that are set to unfold on the Queen Vic on Christmas Day.. He even noticed that he kept getting his lines wrong because he was so engrossed in the exciting story he was telling.

He said: “There were a couple of things that happened at Christmas that I deliberately didn’t read (the script) because I knew Kat and Alfie were going to be involved and I didn’t really want to know what was going to happen next.” Queen Vic at Christmas.

New Year’s trick

Looking a little further than Christmas, earlier this month the director Christopher McGill posted on X what he filmed EastEnders for a “colossal week” of New Year’s episodes. This “epic” block of episodes was filmed over several weeks, with McGill sharing daily teaser photos online that have us very intrigued.

The director promises. that he filmed in a room that was “crammed (packed) with East End symbols”, potentially teasing that there could be some payoff on the cards. There were also ominous references to both trains and planes, suggesting there may be a grand stunt at play.

An explosive New Year appears to be on the horizon in Albert Square, but will the events of Christmas create a dramatic series of episodes?

Finally, Christmas isn’t everything EastEnders fans can expect that in the coming months as the show turns 40 in February. Soap will celebrate I’m putting on another completely live episode this month, celebrating the first time EastEnders has been doing this since 2015.

But this time there will be a twist: the soap opera will bring an interactive element to the live show. Viewers will be asked to vote on their desired outcome to the love story, although it is not yet known which characters will be involved. Viewers’ choices will be played out during the live broadcast, with the actors rehearsing a range of outcomes in advance.

With plans for the livestream already set, will Christmas reveal any clues about what the mysterious love story might be?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One. The show also airs on BBC iPlayer, with most episodes airing early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
