‘Below Deck’ Star Captain Sandy on Firing Squad – ‘Lean on My Lawyer’

Captain Sandy Yaun, the first female superyacht captain aboard Bravo’s. Below Deck: Mediterraneanhas made difficult decisions throughout her 30-plus years at sea.

In an interview with NewsweekYon explained that a difficult part of her job is firing crew members, a decision she does not take lightly and often makes with the input of her lawyer.

Below Deck and its spin-offs chronicle the risky, drama-filled lives of yacht crew members and the challenges of a demanding industry. Yaun’s leadership style has earned both praise and criticism from fans, but years of weathering literal and figurative storms have taught her lessons in resilience, leadership and the importance of setting clear boundaries and expectations for her team.

Sitting with Newsweek Ahead of her appearance at the Hayu FanFest in London, the reality TV star revealed how she would approach shooting, even if the decision would be unpopular with viewers.

“I always rely on my lawyer. So, I’ll tell you this: It took me years to get my marine license. This isn’t something you can just sign up for and spend a couple of weeks doing; This is a federal license issued by the US government. OK? It’s a big deal,” Yaun said. Newsweek.

“Every decision I’ve ever had to make about production, about going to sea, about leaving the dock – in this case about drugs – I call my lawyer. He says, “Fire her now. This is being filmed, God forbid something happens.” ‘

“So I follow what they say because he is my lawyer. He keeps me out of trouble. Unlike the captain who had a boat that sank off the coast of Italy? He, I mean, look what he goes through. “

Yawn is referring to a luxury yacht. Bayesiansank during a storm off the coast of Sicily in August. There were 22 people on board the yacht (12 passengers and 10 crew members), seven people died. The ship’s captain, James Cutfield, is one of several people being investigated on suspicion of manslaughter.

The TV presenter explained that being on the water is “very intense,” which people don’t always realize.

“It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Believe me, I would have been like this, on the hook… And that sailboat was anchored right off the coast, and they sank – we are going out to sea,” she said.

“So I just called my maritime lawyer. Hannah and I have a great relationship, you know, I saw her in Australia, we’re doing well. I learned something I didn’t know, she learned something she didn’t know, and we hugged.”

Working on a yacht is often incredibly difficult. Crew members spend time living and working in close quarters, interacting with guests, and trying to improve their interpersonal relationships. According to Yaun, when there is a conflict between the team, she leaves them to sort things out among themselves.

“You know, hey, they’re adults. Figure it out. And if he gets to the bridge, it’s really not a good day for them,” she said.

“Basically, I just bring them both in and let them tell their story and then tell them to get their act together or I’ll fire them both.”

When asked how she juggles guests, crew, filming and the ocean, Yaun said it’s all part of her day-to-day work. Although some Below Deck While viewers might think that having cameras pointed at you while you’re trying to do such a sensitive job might make things difficult, Yaun said she often doesn’t notice the cameras are there.

“You forget about them because of the fourth wall; you don’t get a chance to talk to them,” she said, before adding: “As far as the team is concerned, they’re just doing their job. So they know my expectations, and if they don’t do it, then I have a conversation. The rest is easy to navigate.

“What I find difficult to navigate is the weather. I can’t control the weather. I mean, you know, big sea, big swell, and the stabilizers aren’t working or something like that. This is what I just do. “Okay, just a minute, we’ll figure this out.”
