Tokyo’s Shibuya district is on high alert due to overcrowding over the weekend before Halloween.

Tokyo’s Shibuya district is stepping up patrols in its busy areas as Saturday is expected to see the biggest crowds of people during the Halloween period this year.

District officials are concerned about possible problems with crowds and outdoor drinking as many young people and foreigners may gather around Shibuya Station.

Officials say traffic is expected to peak on the Saturday of the last weekend before Halloween and Oct. 31.

The department conducted street patrols at nearly three times its normal level Friday night.

Employees picked up the empty cans and informed people that the branch prohibited drinking in public places.

Staff are also asking stores near Shibuya Station not to sell alcoholic beverages from 6 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday.

Shibuya plans to take a similar precaution on October 31. The neighboring district of Shinjuku will also prohibit drinking alcohol on the streets around the Kabukicho entertainment district.

Shibuya official Teshigawara Takeru is asking people planning to visit the ward during the Halloween period to reschedule their schedules as it is expected to be very crowded.
