Locals celebrate Dia de los Muertos

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Death Day is almost here and Localish is celebrating by remembering the traditions that make the day so special.

You’ll see some of the many reasons why the holiday, called “Day of the Dead” in English, is so emotional and celebratory.

From designing altars to perfecting Calavera or skull makeup, and even going to the bakery to find the right bread, it’s all about honoring loved ones.

“We celebrate death because without death there is no life,” said Rolando Nichols, one of the founders of the annual Día de los Muertos parade in Long Beach, California.

“This is not just a Mexican holiday. He transcended boundaries, religion, ethnicity, and I think that’s part of his beauty,” he said.

In the new special, “Locals Celebrate Muertos Day,” you’ll see how the holiday’s popularity grows, from local festivals to movie theaters, shopping malls, Major League Baseball stadiums and the Disneyland Resort.

You’ll also see how the holiday inspires artists and designers to create truly remarkable works of art.
