Jordan, co-owner NASCAR Cup Series team 23XI Racing, along with Denny Hamlin, moved one step closer to winning its first championship in the sport on Sunday.

And he can thank Tyler Reddick, driver of the team’s No. 45 Toyota.

Reddick passed Ryan Blaney on the final lap to win the playoff race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, earning a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series championship race.

Jordan couldn’t be prouder.

“The little kid kicked his ass,” Jordan told NBC Sports minutes before cutting short Reddick’s post-race interview.

“I’m proud of him. Oh man, he just let it go. He just went for it and I’m glad. We needed it. We needed it.”

Jordan then ran up to Reddick and gave him a tight hug, wrapping his 6-foot-6 frame around the driver.

“Yes, baby! Good job, kid! Dude, good job.”

Jordan knows a thing or two about winning championships.

Now his eyes are turned to someone else.

On the final lap, Reddick moved up from third to first, taking advantage of a couple of big chances for the eventual victory.

“We were backed into a corner, man, and we had no other choice,” Reddick told NBC Sports’ Marty Snyder. “We did everything we could to win this race. We are fighting for the championship.

“I couldn’t believe (the winning pass). I just knew I had to get to his right door. (Blaney) cleaned me up, I appreciate it. Just really, really excited that we’re going to have a chance to win this championship.”

A throwback to Michael Jordan and George Gervin’s one-on-one fight.

For the first time in Reddick’s career and in the history of 23XI Racing, the team will compete for a championship at Phoenix Raceway.

Reddick was ecstatic and grateful, talking about what Jordan meant to him and the effort he put into this team as a co-owner.

“To be able to reward him with days like today is truly an honor,” Reddick said.

“It was really great to see how happy he was. We are all very happy about this.

“He believed in me. He believes in this team. People – him, Denny and everyone else – came together to create what 23XI is. He put a lot into this.

“It’s great to be able to help him and everyone else who is part of the team at such critical times.”

Reddick will try to drive for Jordan again in Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway.

If Reddick is successful, Jordan will have to expand his trophy case and make room next to his six trophies. NBA championships.
