Two died after falling into a manhole

Two persons rescued from a drain on Melavadampokki Road in Thiruvarur on Sunday were declared dead on arrival at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvarur.

According to police, Manimaran, 30, the driver of a private sewage treatment vehicle, and Arunachalam, 27, of Varukuchi Road in Thiruvarur, were discharging sewage into a manhole on Melavadampokki Road when the accident occurred. Manimaran was the first to slip into the hatch and Arunachalam, who was trying to pull him out, also fell into it.

After seeing both fall into the hatch, local residents alerted the fire and rescue service and the police. Both of them were rescued and rushed to Government Medical College Hospital Tiruvarur where they were declared brought dead on arrival. Thiruvarur city police have registered a case and are investigating.
