City of Tshwane warns of fines against residents not following water guidelines

CAPE TOWN – The City of Tshwane has warned residents of severe penalties for reckless water use amid water problems in the metro.

The capital on Sunday urged residents to urgently reduce water consumption, citing rising demand that could threaten water supply in the coming summer months.

Water levels in the city’s reservoirs are falling rapidly, with Tshwane drawing about 800 million liters of water a day from Rand Water, 18% more than the permitted limit.

Selby town spokesman Bokaba said despite enforcing water by-laws, some residents continued to flout the rules and use water recklessly.

“The City encourages all residents to make a concerted effort to reduce water consumption by following water restrictions. Punitive measures will be taken against violators.”
