Robert Roberson’s brother confirms his innocence in new letter

TYLER, Texas (b.KETK) – Thomas Roberson, brother of death row inmate Robert Roberson, responded to a letter published by Nikki Curtis’ family members.

Nikki Curtis’ family breaks silence at Roberson hearing

Robert, a Palestinian resident, is the subject of ongoing controversy surrounding the 2003 trial in which he was sentenced to death for the murder of his daughter Nikki.

Robert was scheduled to be executed on October 17, but the Texas House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence intervened. issuing an unprecedented subpoena prompting the Texas Supreme Court to halt the execution.

Nikki’s brother Matthew Bowman, Nikki’s aunt Jessica Rachel Carrier and Nikki’s grandfather Larry Gene Bowman published the letter, first obtained by KETK, it rebukes the committee and insists that Roberson is guilty based on evidence other than the shaken baby theory that was used to convict him.

Thomas, Robert’s older brother, made the letter public to express his continued support for his brother’s innocence.

KETK summarizes and quotes directly from Thomas’ letter below:

“I am Thomas Roberson. Robert Roberson is my older brother. Nikki was his daughter and my precious niece. When she died at the age of two and he was blamed, it destroyed our whole family. No one who knew Robert well believed that he was capable of harming any child. To this day I am convinced that he could not have done what he was accused of. I don’t claim to understand the science behind Shaken Baby or know Nikki’s medical history. But I know Robert. He was always my support when we were growing up. He was a man who stood up for children who were bullied by others. I have never seen him hurt or say a bad word to any child, including the two disabled children he had before Nikki, whom our family raised without any input from their mother.”

The Texas House continues hearings in the case of Robert Roberson – without his testimony

Thomas continues to talk about how Robert took over Nikki’s care after Child Protective Services took her away from her mother. Thomas said Robert said he had turned his life around and returned to Palestine to take care of Nikki.

“When I was 20 or 21, I went with my mother and Robert several times to pick up Nikki for visits before he got custody. The Roberson family threw a big party for Nikki when she turned two. Everyone thought she was so sweet and sweet. Then, the following month, the Bowmans—Nikki’s maternal half-grandparents—agreed that Robert should take custody of Nikki. We were all so happy for him.”

According to his letter, the time since Nikki’s death and Robert’s trial has been “one long nightmare,” but Robert still prays for his entire family.

Thomas concludes his letter by addressing the letter’s writers, Nikki’s family. He points out that Matthew, Nikki’s brother, was only 4 years old and did not know Robert, as he reportedly did not spend time with Thomas’ family.

He reiterated that Larry, Nikki’s grandfather, trusted Robert enough to take custody of Nikki. Thomas said he understands the pain Nikki’s family is going through, but believes they are only publicly opposing Robert to justify his execution.

“These people don’t know my brother and shouldn’t have to see the pain they cause by spreading stories about him and his cause, things they can’t know about – stories that aren’t true. This kind of cruelty on top of a very sad situation doesn’t help anyone. Nikki had a father who loved her and he has a family who loves him. I saw my brother with Nikki and I know that he did not harm his child in any way. I hope the truth will come out one day before it’s too late.”
