Incoming rain could mean flooding, warns Nature Conservancy

“Water in rivers, streams and canals will flow quickly during and after rain.”

Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area could experience localized flooding in low-lying areas if the upcoming weather system brings heavy rain and thunderstorms.

“The flood control channels managed by the SSMRCA are currently operating at normal levels. With heavy rainfall forecast, these canals are expected to experience high water levels and flows,” according to a press release issued by Sault Ste. Mari Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA). “It is very important to note that water in rivers, streams and canals will flow quickly during and after rainfall.”

Sault Ste. The Mary Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) is issuing a flood forecast statement to residents regarding current watershed conditions. Flood forecasting and warning are the responsibilities of the Provincial Conservation Authority. This statement is being sent to keep residents informed and informed.

The low pressure system is expected to bring significant rainfall tonight through Thursday evening. The forecast calls for heavy rain with two days of possible accumulations ranging from 30mm to 45mm and a possible additional 10-20mm due to localized thunderstorms.

Local rivers, creeks and creeks are within normal levels according to recent observations. However, expected precipitation will likely cause significant runoff. This may increase the risk of overland runoff and localized flooding in low-lying areas and urban areas with poor drainage.

Flood control canals managed by SSMRCA are currently functioning normally. With heavy rainfall forecast, these canals are expected to experience high water levels and flows. It is extremely important to note that water in rivers, streams and canals will flow quickly during and after rain.

SSMRCA will continue to monitor stream flows throughout the watershed and provide updates as new information becomes available.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from flood control channels and all waterways. Fast flowing water and slippery stream banks pose serious dangers. Please ensure that children and pets are kept away from these areas.
