Philadelphia police officer shoots and kills wanted man fatally shot a woman in Kensington on October 8.investigators said Tuesday evening.

Police initially spotted the 29-year-old suspect and called for backup, Deputy Investigations Commissioner Frank Vanora said. However, the suspect fled from the police.

Two officers chased him and an altercation occurred near the 3100 block of Rich Street just after 5:30 p.m., police said. Both the 29-year-old suspect and at least one officer exchanged gunfire. The suspect was shot in the shoulder and remains in critical but stable condition at the hospital, Vanor said. No officers were injured, Vanor said.

Vanor said the officers who found the 29-year-old suspect were patrolling the area at the time of the shooting, and authorities had been searching for him for weeks.

A 29-year-old suspect is accused of fatally shooting a 23-year-old woman who was walking near Steak N Beer store on Kensington Avenue near Somerset Street still October 8th.

Police said they believe the woman was merely a bystander and the gunman intended to shoot someone else.

Witnesses told police the gunman was inside the store when he got into a fight with one or two other men, Chief Inspector Scott Small said at the time of the shooting. The fight escalated on Kensington Avenue when the shooter fired one shot, hitting a woman about 200 feet up the block.

Police said the woman was 23 years old and frequented the area. After the shooting, she was taken to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead.

Days after the woman’s death, video evidence led to the homicide unit obtaining an arrest warrant for a 29-year-old man who was being actively sought by investigators.
