Police in Kontum province in the Central Highlands rescued a 31-year-old woman who survived 13 hours of attack and imprisonment at the hands of her partner, authorities said on Tuesday.

Le Thi Thanh Thuy was reportedly beaten by her partner, a 40-year-old man named Duc, with whom she had lived for almost ten years. The couple has a 7-year-old child.

According to Tui, the violence began after she returned home from lunch with colleagues.

Enraged by jealousy, Duke allegedly used his hands, knife handles and belts on her. He also confiscated her phone and kept her locked in his house, not allowing her to eat or drink.

Despite her attempts to scream, the neighbors did not hear her screams.

Toohey managed to discreetly use a spare phone to send a text message to a friend, who alerted police. Officers then arrived and rescued her.

Both Tui and Duke were called to the police station for questioning. Thuy was later taken to Kon Tum General Hospital where she was treated for multiple injuries to her face, legs and back.

During the police investigation, Duke claimed that Tui had been unfaithful to him, but refused to admit it. “In anger, I hit her several times,” he said.

More than 3,100 families in Vietnam experienced domestic violence in 2023, half of them physical, Labor, Disability and Social Affairs Minister Dao Ngoc Dung said at a meeting in May.

Of the 3,200 victims, 2,600 were women and 565 were men, Dung said.
