Athens and Clark Police Remind People of Halloween Safety Tips

Athens-Clarke police will be out on their regular patrols Thursday evening as Halloween watchers fan out across the area in search of holiday treats.

Police will also patrol residential areas as time and call volume permit, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

“We remind the community that everyone plays a vital role in having a safe Halloween,” police spokesman Jeff Gilland said.

Police have offered the following suggestions for a safe evening:

For those who are trick or treating

  • Use a flashlight and wear reflective clothing.
  • Avoid wearing masks that reduce the visibility of oncoming vehicles or hazards on sidewalks and roadways.
  • Travel in groups.
  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible.

For parents

  • Remind children that they should never go inside the house to buy candy or treats.
  • Inspect your children’s candy before they eat it.

If you’re driving

  • Drive slowly and carefully when in the surrounding area.
  • Don’t text while driving.
  • Watch for children when approaching other vehicles on the street.

For homeowners

  • Light up your home and sidewalks to prevent trips and falls.
  • Meet trick-or-treaters outside in a well-lit area.
  • Get together with your neighbors to combine trick-or-treating stops.
