Forgetting our founders, Supporting the library: letters from PD

Forgetting our founders, Supporting the library: letters from PD

Press Democrat readers weigh in on the election and more.

We forget our founders

EDITOR: US Constitution was written in the colonial forge of debate and compromise. His main goal was not to dictate results. Rather, it establishes a procedural framework for achieving results. Americans didn’t fight taxation. They fought against taxation without representation. We trample on the brilliance and blood of our founders if today we don’t care how we get the public policies we want, but we are willing to bury constitutional processes in favor of a man who idolizes the likes of Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orban, Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un, because that we like the results we think they will bring us. That civics teaching may not have led us to understand the importance of rejecting Donald Trump as our nation’s president is a damning critique of our nation’s education system.

Objectives of the Conservative Club

EDITOR: The Oakmont Conservative Club is made up of Republicans and independents who want to vote this November and make America great again. We consider ourselves people with common sense who plan to vote for Republican candidates. Simply put, what we want are secure borders, low inflation, a balanced budget, lower food and fuel prices, a strong military, deportation of illegal immigrants with criminal records, a strong police force that can do their jobs again, the elimination of thousands of regulations and provisions were passed without voter approval.

Library support

EDITOR: I remember 10 years ago when our library system was so underfunded that hours were cut, staffing was minimal, and programs were few and far between. At the time, I was puzzled as to why the district, which offered so much generosity, did not provide stable funding for this important public resource.

But that all changed in 2016 when voters approved a small sales tax to support our libraries. Since then, thanks to stable and adequate funding, our libraries have been able to offer an impressive array of programs, books, events and services, all under the guidance of qualified staff.

Le doesn’t risk losing this source of funding. Libraries uplift the community and are one of the few public places that are freely open to everyone. Policymakers and public health professionals rarely consider public libraries as part of the health care system, even though they have a number of features that have the potential to improve public health, such as continuing education, social support, access to technology, job training, and community connections. society. What a deal. That’s why I vote for Measure Watts continue this support of libraries without hesitation.

Democrats are hurting themselves.

EDITOR: Bret Stephens has offered the most accurate account I’ve seen of why this election is so close and why, if Donald Trump wins, the Democratic Party won’t need to look beyond the mirror to get an explanation for what happened (“If Trump wins, who will liberals blame?” October 24). For most of my life, Democrats have talked down to or outright rejected large swathes of the middle-class and blue-collar electorate, lumping everyone who disagrees with their pseudo-enlightened viewpoints into groups they can conveniently dismiss as “rednecks” or “disgusting people.” “

Is there a dangerous and misinformed cult of personality supporting Trump? Yes, and these people are hopeless. These are not the people I’m talking about. There is a much larger group of people who are not fans of Trump, but who have long since grown tired of being told that they are ignorant racists, that their beliefs and worldviews based on life experience are wrong, and that their concerns are not worth listening to. a place at the table of our evolving society.

Hillary Clinton was the poster child for this mocking dismissal, and it cost her the presidency. And just like in 2016, millions of people will hold their noses and vote for Trump for one simple reason: they are tired of constantly being talked down to and told that their experiences and concerns don’t matter.

Newton for City Council

EDITOR: As a former mayor of Santa Rosa, I am proud to support Jeremy Newton for City Council. Newton has exceptional dedication, resilience and leadership – qualities our city needs to move forward.

With a foundation in public service from the Naval Academy and combat experience, Newton has proven he can get things done, including his successful advocacy on behalf of veterans, which led to President Barack Obama signing a life-saving bill to combat veteran suicide . As chairman of the Housing Authority, he developed a strong understanding of housing policy and demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of working families in Santa Rosa. His vision of increasing housing affordability, revitalizing downtown and addressing homelessness is not just a plan, but a promise of a safer, more vibrant community that should give us all hope.

During his time in Santa Rosa, Newton invested himself in understanding the problems of our city. His support from local leaders is a testament to his work ethic, integrity and willingness to serve. I believe Newton will bring positive, lasting change to our community.

I fully support Newton’s candidacy because he will serve the people of Santa Rosa with honor, insight and true dedication.

Independent judiciary

EDITOR: As a retired lawyer, I am extremely proud of the American judicial system in the era of Donald Trump. The judges of this country, regardless of political appointment or philosophy, have for the most part been faithful to their oath of office. They were present during the process of passing the law in accordance with the provisions of the constitutions and laws of the country. The judiciary has been the only institution of government that has withstood enormous political pressure, credible threats, and personal danger to discharge its constitutional responsibilities honestly and diligently. These men and women need and deserve our support. An independent judiciary is the last defense against attacks on our freedoms and the rule of law.
