Grand Tour hosts wanted to stop before they ‘ruined’ the show, says James May

May said of the series ending: “It’s a bit sad and I know people are sad it’s over, but it can’t go on forever and we all get on a little bit.

“And I think we exhausted the idea pretty thoroughly, so we kind of quietly put it aside rather than destroy it.”

May was then asked if it had really hit him yet that this chapter in his life had ended, to which he replied: “Yes, it keeps coming back to me in very small ways.

“I think at the Grand Tour finale I talked about things like my green bag, which I only used to travel with the other two.

“And in some ways we’ve been quite spoiled, other people have effectively organized your holidays, we just have to come and do the presentations and adventures.

“So now I’ll have to organize my own holidays and probably only do them twice a year, but I’ve done this for a long time and I’m very grateful for it.”

Jeremy Clarkson laughs with James May in a scene from The Grand Tour: Alone.

Clarkson previously explained he himself thought about ending the series, saying: “This is a game for young people. Another thing is that if we sat down and asked: “What’s next?” – well, we were everywhere. We have done everything that can really be done with a car, but the world has shrunk – and that’s the tragedy.
